RSVP’s Mission Statement:The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) invites adults 55 and better to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. RSVP volunteers share their life experiences and skills.
Reading Buddies is a State-award winning program that was created in response to President Clinton’s America Reads Initiative. United Way of the EUP’s RSVP started a Reading Buddies Program at Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac Community Action Agency and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Head Start schools in 2017. RSVP Volunteers are paired with early head start and head start classrooms for small group reading. A Reading Buddy spends 45 minutes to an hour each week reading with students. The Program increases positive experiences, assists in building a child’s vocabulary, and increases reading opportunities for children. Volunteers are the heart of this Program!
When you volunteer with RSVP in a youth mentorship role, you become part of a group of people who truly make a difference in the lives of at-risk young men and women. RSVP Volunteers establish stable relationships with students who may lack support at home. Many of these students struggle with having to make the choice between going to school every day or going to work to help support their household. Some students lack a stable home environment, finding themselves bouncing from couch to couch or worse, and need the encouragement of a positive role model who inspires them through mentoring opportunities within the school.
